“Fan the flame of hilarity with the wing of friendship, and pass the rosy wine.”

CHARLES DICKENS (1812–1870),

ENGLISH NOVELIST

No matter how busy our lives were on the winery, my family eagerly embraced any occasion to have a celebration: birthdays and anniversaries, visits from relatives and friends, baptisms, confirmations, weddings, and of course the feasts of the Christian year: Christmas and New Year, Easter and Pentecost, and we Lutherans even celebrated two saint days, St. Martin on November 11 and St. Nicholas on December 6. With a big family like ours, and relatives nearby, it seemed there was always a reason to celebrate and create a little feast. It seemed rather normal and nothing out of the ordinary to me until I left home.
